#10 - What Wedding Dress Style Looks Best on You

Episode #10 - What Wedding Dress Style Looks Best on You

Today we discuss wedding dresses and what looks best on you. Brides, as you know, your dress is a personal choice. You should be happy with the dress you wear. We learned in our conversation with PMN from Dream Dresses in episode #5, going to the boutique and trying on dresses is the best way to find out what is actually flattering to your body shape. Wedding dress choice is such a personal thing. You may grow up wanting a big ball gown but once you've tried on other types you may change your mind.

Mermaid: The mermaid dress is close fitting through the bodice, down through the hips and to about mid or lower calf where the skirt flares out.

Trumpet: A straight skirt with a hem flounce that flares away from the body at the hem.

A-line: A dress or skirt silhouette that is narrower at the top, flaring gently wider toward the bottom thereby resembling the letter A. Works well on most figure types; good for disguising bottom-heavy figures.

Column: In fashion, a column, similar to a sheath dress, is a type of dress designed to tightly fit the body. It is often made of a very light and thin material like cotton or silk, and rarely contains any flourishes. Unlike the shorter cocktail dress and the longer ballroom dress, a column dress typically falls around the knees or lower thighs, and can be either strapped or strapless.

Empire: A type of dress or top where the waistline is raised above the natural waistline, sometimes as high as right below the bust.

Ball Gown: It is traditionally a full-skirted gown reaching the floor.

Tea Length: Allows you to show off your shoes! Works for most body types.

Tall and Thin, Petit, Hourglass, Apple, Pear, and Full all have “recommended” styles.

Wedding Dress Trends for 2016:

  • A Basic Bateau Neckline - a wide, high neckline that follows the curve of the collarbone and ends in points on the shoulder seams.
  • The “Dipped” V Neckline
  • Blush-Colored Dresses
  • Cropped Tops

Just to name a few.

Mother of the bride colors to avoid on wedding day: White, Ivory, Cream, Champagne, Black and Red http://bit.ly/1nIomPr Click to Tweet

Mother of the Bride (and Groom):

  • Mothers of Bride and Groom should probably touch base on what they are wearing/buying. So they don't clash or outdo each other.
  • Colors to avoid: White, Ivory, Cream, Champagne, Black and Red
  • It's ok for a Mother to dress up if that is her style, but of course, she should consider the wishes of the bride. Not too flashy/sexy
  • Dress in YOUR style

Bridesmaids:

  • They do not have to match but they should complement each other within the colors of the wedding ie. Same dress different shades, different dress same color
  • The point is: The bride should stand out from the bridesmaids, so if the bride chooses a nontraditional color then the bridesmaids could wear White, Ivory, Cream, or Champagne. Otherwise, it's best if they do not wear the same or slightly different color than the bride.
  • Do they all need to wear the same makeup, jewelry, and shoes?
