Episode #41 – Vows, Traditional or Not?

Vows are a very personal yet important part of your ceremony. You use them to relay the promises of your marriage to your significant other. There are many ways to write and say your vows. Today we are giving you a few examples of traditional and non-traditional vows.

-Traditional vows vary with religion and cultures.

  • Basic Protestant Vows

“I, ___, take thee, ___, to be my wedded husband/wife, to have and to hold, from this day forward, for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish, till death do us part, according to God's holy ordinance; and thereto I pledge thee my faith [or] pledge myself to you.”

  • Episcopal

“______, wilt thou have this woman/man to be thy wedded wife/husband to live together after God's ordinance in the Holy Estate of matrimony? Wilt thou love her/him? Comfort her/him, honor and keep her/him, in sickness and in health, and forsaking all others keep thee only unto her/him as long as you both shall live?”

-Non-Traditional is basically writing your own vows.

Tips on how to write if you are writing your own vows:

  • Use YOUR words
  • Short and Sweet
  • Plan
  • Poetry, song lyrics, stories
  • Record yourself answering questions about your fiance
  • When did you know that you were in love and wanted to marry
  • What do you want to promise to your fiance
  • Favorite memory
  • How you met
  • What do you have now that you didn't have before you met
  • What are your long-term hopes and goals
  • What inspires you about your fiance
  • Ask your officiant and consult books and websites
  • You can write your vows, together or separately
  • Decide on a structure
  • Be funny or touching (be yourself)
